Team Fortress 2 is an online, class based, first person hat wearing simulator, with guns. It's true! It originally started out as a competitive class based FPS, but since the introduction of hats, it is now solely dedicated to the simulation of wearing a wide variety of headgear. The war between the Red and Blu teams (their spelling, not mine) is purely secondary. I affectionately call it “Valve Hat Simulator 2007”.

The first thing I must mention is, particularly these days with all the new content added in and the myriad of Source engine upgrades done over the past few years, you must have a PC that's capable of some serious work. The rig I have was made in 2005, and even after upgrading it to its limit, TF2 still grinds through the busy stuff. Having even a Dual Core system with a low end modern GFX card will offer significant improvement over the recommended 3.0 Ghz CPU requirement.

That said, if you've got the beef for it, TF2 is a very pretty game, with all the usual Source trimmings such as HDR lighting, along with TF2's unique shaders and effects, like the Spy's cloak or the deconstruction sparks from a player entering a teleporter. Other things to watch out for are the pretty decent facial animations when the characters speak, as well as more subtle things like the warping effect of the Pyro's airblast.

The classes are all designed quite ingeniously too. They all have a unique profile no matter what the distance, so you'll never confuse a Medic for a Scout, even if they're in the thick of a huge battle half a map away.

The HUD is laid out nicely too, keeping itself out of the way for the most part. Health is in the bottom left corner, along with Spy disguise information (if you're playing that class), ammunition, metal and special weapon information are in the bottom right, while the timer and objective information are at the top and bottom centre of the screen respectively. Kill information is displayed at the top right of the screen, with the player's own kills and assists being highlighted in white. The top left is usually empty, but if you set any of the 379 achievements in the game to display on the HUD, they will appear here, assuming they are applicable to your class.

The main menu has undergone a bit of a change since the game first came out. At first, it looked like any other Source game, a list of items to choose from. Around the time that TF2 became available on Macs, Valve changed the menu to a cleaner, more spread out style, but took away the changing high-res artwork and instead left a static image of the classes behind it.
