'A Maze' at Powerhouse Theater delves into the nature of fame and creativity

About the playwright

In the years leading up to his graduation from Poughkeepsie Day School in 1986, Rob Handel and his classmates wrote original musicals and scripts, and even directed plays alongside faculty and staff.
"The Poughkeepsie Day School had an encouraging atmosphere and great teachers. It was a great experience," Handel said.
He became a playwright intern at Powerhouse Theater in 1987 and returns this year for his Powerhouse debut with "A Maze." He earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a master's degree in playwriting from Brown. He resides in Pittsburgh, Pa. He said his parents still live in the Poughkeepsie area.

That premise is explored in "A Maze," a play by Poughkeepsie native Rob Handel that debuted this week as the second Mainstage production at Vassar and New York Stage and Film's Powerhouse Theater. "Hollywood creates this myth about artists who are crazy, nuts and difficult to deal with," Handel said during a recent interview with the Journal. "As an artist, I am not crazy, and I wanted to address this in my play." Characters in "A Maze" include a graphic novelist, portrayed by Patrick Carroll, who is struggling to complete his 15,000-page comic book. Austin Lysy plays a musician searching for inspiration for his next hit and Betsy Hogg portrays a young girl trying to re-create her identity after years of captivity. Rounding out the ensemble cast are Mark Alhadeff, Heidi Armbruster, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Mariann Mayberry and Daniel Oreskes. Powerhouse Theater is a collaboration between New York Stage and Film and Vassar College, and is dedicated to aiding both emerging and established artists in the development and production of new works for theater and film. The summer season of staged productions , musicals, workshops and readings is in its 27th year at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.
