San Rafael artist raises and paints butterflies

San Rafael artist MaryAnn Nardo not only paints butterflies, she's raised them from eggs. As something of a butterfly wrangler, she's been able to combine her interest in science with her career in art.

"Since my background is in fine art and scientific illustration, I like to join those two worlds," she said. "I work from many sources, but I like raising butterflies to really get the feel of them. And it's fun."

After a neighbor gave her anise and milkweed branches with butterfly eggs on them, Nardo put the plants in a jar and watched a swallowtail and a monarch butterfly come into the world through their four-part life cycle -- egg, larva,

pupa and adult.

"You watch it grow from a little tiny dot to a caterpillar that eats voraciously and grows and grows," she explained. "And one day you look and it's gone into the chrysalis form, hanging on the plant. It's usually a matter of weeks and the butterfly emerges. It's amazing."

Using the living butterflies as models as well as studying and sketching butterfly specimens at the California Academy of Sciences, Nardo painted a series of eight California butterfly images in watercolor on Douglas fir panels. She calls the series "Painted Wings."

"It seemed like a good starting point to focus on California butterflies in this series, ones I've seen when I go out to hike -- and I've hiked all over, from Marin to the

Sierra," she said.

In addition to the swallowtail and monarch butterflies, she painted butterflies with such evocative names as American lady, angel wing, buckeye, blue copper, cloudless yellow sulfur and mourning cloak.

She prefers painting on wood over canvas, a technique she began years ago when she painted local plants, insects and animals on cabinets built by her musician husband, Jon Mitguard.

"Painting on wood, there's a texture and a living feeling behind the painting

that I like," she said. "It's unusual to paint on wood with watercolor, but the reason I use it is that it's transparent, so people can see the wood and the wood is part of the painting. It adds another dimension.
