WEST TEXAS: Gathering for hope and prosperity

— It was in the prayers, in the Scriptures, in the chitchat before and after the Rural Life Mass near Winters Thursday evening — rain was everywhere.

It was everywhere except in the fields and pastures surrounding the small farm that hosted the Mass, where a gusty wind blew in dust but helped cool the 140 people gathered under an oasis of trees.

There Bishop Michael Pfeifer and priests from Diocese of San Angelo, which includes 29 central West Texas counties, led prayers and preached about living as Christians in a rural setting, helping one another and having faith that God will provide.

"We ask for that special gift called," and Pfeifer signaled for the crowd to complete the sentence.

"Rain!" the crowd responded.

One couple met with the bishop after the Mass and asked him to bless a rain gage.

They hoped to fill it up a few times.

Another man, Edwin Deike, from a few mile east of Winters, remembered a previous Rural Life Mass, which Pfeifer said he has been doing in the summer each year for about 26 years. That year, Pfeifer had blessed barrels of oil at a Mass among oil pump jacks around Midland.

Deike asked Pfeifer to bless a Powerade bottle full of petroleum and a plastic baggie full of oats.

"I'm ready for that water," Deike said.

Pfeifer also mounted a horse and blessed it and another horse after the Mass, sprinkling them with holy water.

People had come from Ballinger, Miles, Abilene, Coleman, Wall, Robert Lee and Brownwood.

Many had come to the Rural Life Mass before, but for others it was a first time. One first-timer was a nun, Sister Xavier Jujjavarapu who had been in the United States about a year from India and now lives in Abilene.

"It's a new experience for me," Jujjavarapu said. "This is going to be a fruitful year. That is my hope."

Gary Jacob, whose farm hosted the Rural Life Mass, said he hadn't attended a Rural Life Mass before either.

He was approached about using his farm by a deacon who he plays dominoes with.

"I think I'm going to make it a point from now on" to go to the Rural Life Masses, Jacob said, carrying his young grandson as people found their seats before the service.

The people shared a meal after the service, reflecting the way a rural community should cooperate, Pfeifer said.

He said a rural community's dependence on nature either makes farmers great gamblers or people of great faith.
