Concert review: Fleet Foxes at Red Butte Garden

However, I felt ambivalent about the show. Yes, the energy and enthusiasm of the band was high, and they fed off of the crowd's fawning. And I really, really like the band's two albums -- I named the band's debut album the Best Album of 2008, and when the band released the follow-up "Helplessness Blues" earlier this year, I gave it an A- grade, and after months of listening to it, I might have given it a too-low grade. It is even better than the debut, which is a tall order. But I felt that the band that sounds so great on record wanted to be a rock band Friday, and didn't play to its strengths. True, the musicianship of the band has only gotten better over the last several years, and I am all in favor of having more flutes in music. But the band was simply too loud, and frenzied, with a mix that unleashed a wall of sound that dulled the power of the band. Part of the reason why the band is so good on record is that singer and songwriter Robin Pecknold has written some of the most interesting and thought-provoking lyrics in recent memory, with intense introspection that would almost be too precious if it wasn't so heartfelt and self-deprecating. "On Helplessness Blues," you see Pecknold wrestling with who he is and who he believes he should be, and the answer is that it's not always pretty. But with the band muscling its way through these songs, the message the band was conveying on stage was secondary. With six instruments all competing with one another to blast the sound out beyond the foothills, I missed the nuances and finesse that the band has showed on its records. Any band can be loud, but it takes courage to rein in some of the gargage-band inclinations. That's why some of the best moments were when the band allowed itself to slow down, and rely on the songs' inherent beauty and craftsmanship. For me, the highlight was "Montezuma," which featured Pecknold alone on acoustic guitar, backed by gorgeous harmonies from the band. Pecknold slightly altered the vocal melody on the song, and revealed another side of the song that resonated with me. As a side note, Alela Diane & Wild Divine were a pleasant and enjoyable country-rock band, and Diane's contralto was so sublime that I'd love to hear more of here. And as for thw weather -- it was scorchingly hot when the show began, but Red Butte Garden is where hot days go to die. By the time the Fleet Foxes took the stage, it was chilly and windy.
