Fans melted hearing Barber

Singer-songwriter Jill Barber is one of those performers that Halifax would love to claim as its own.

Now based in Vancouver, the Toronto-raised chanteuse lived among us for six, too-short years, honing her craft.

Standing on stage at the 25th annual TD Halifax Jazz Festival, Barber flirted with Halifax as though it were a spurned lover, telling us why she left — just some old romance thing with a British Columbia boy and a desperately happy wedding — and how she missed us.

Halifax’s heart filled with forgiveness at the rejection and embraced Barber as though we could, once again, possibly, win her back.

Barber’s opening act, also from Vancouver, was the Pugs and Crows, a modern jazz-Eastern European folk group that gathered its audience under the waterfront tent, warming us as the temperatures outside the tent dipped a little.

When Barber and her band took the stage, all thoughts of the cold wind vanished as we were blown by the breeze into a suspension of time, a collective sigh of relief to have Barber back and an opportunity to hear those heartbreaking songs live once more.

Congrats to Laura (Lulu) Healy and her team for elevating summer in Halifax with a premier event that never ceases to enlighten, engage and bring satisfaction. Twenty-five years young, this festival is surely the jewel in the crown of Halifax summer festivals.

On Saturday, I was invited to crash a rehearsal for a play called Naked, which opens tomorrow as part of Halifax Pride’s 2011 Queer Acts Theatre Festival.

It has been expanded by director Richie Wilcox and writer-star Lisa Rose Snow from its first incarnation at the 2010 Fringe Festival.

Getting into the spirit of the piece, I showed up to the rehearsal naked but was surprised to find I was the only one. Luckily my Off The Leash camera hangs at groin height so further embarrassment was avoided, thanks to a conveniently placed Canon Digital Rebel.

Snow is joined on stage by Stephanie MacDonald in the play at the Bus Stop Theatre. The festival features four plays and runs at The Bus Stop and Neptune Studio Theatre until Friday.

Dragons roared, swords struck swords and wine corks popped last week as Two Planks and A Passion Theatre Company celebrated the opening of its annual Theatre Off The Grid offering, Beowulf, near Canning.

It’s Two Planks’ 20th anniversary year, which considering the challenges of running an arts organization these days is a bloody marvel. The outdoor production’s opening was delayed for a night due to rain but last Sunday Mother Nature was kinder and the show went on!
