Put a smile on a basset hound
I wonder sometimes how we would all turn out if people selected their children the way they select their dogs. Wandering off to the local shelter, or going into a pet store in the shopping mall and choosing one because it looks cute is the way it would be, I think.The fact is that choosing a dog is a big deal and should never be undertaken lightly or on the spur of the moment; worse still is doing it for another person. The shelters are full of dogs who have unfortunately given their owners some form of buyer's remorse. It's a sad business.
When Mrs. Summons was making her final selection in her choice of husband - and it was a brutal and painstaking business - she let slip that in her former life she had been the loving owner of a couple of basset hounds, and what did I think about them?
Obviously I must have given the correct response as she sportingly agreed to my offer of marriage and the rest as they say has been history. But there has been no repetition in her life of basset ownership. I think they're great dogs, but they're not quite my breed.
I took She Who Must Be Obeyed on a recent assignment to meet with two of the organizers of the Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California. I knew I was taking a risk, but I employed the services of our two poodles, Frankie and Johnny, to act as reminders that in the dog owning department we are definitely at maximum capacity.
Nonetheless, S.W.M.B.O. did go all dewy-eyed at the experience and one of the three canines in attendance did take her particular fancy. Candy was a nine-month-old female with soft eyes and a loving temperament and kept putting her paws up to be held. It was touching, really; a lesser man might have wobbled.
Bassets are quite big dogs, but with short legs. "They were bred so that they wouldn't outrun the hunters," said Annette Florez, the rescue service's marketing coordinator. "They do vary quite a lot in size, but they average around 60 pounds."
Her own dog, Socrates, is about 9 or 10 and has that slightly graying face that shows his years. Like all bassets he is very dignified as if trying to belie his somewhat comical appearance. These are not vicious dogs and have a very gentle disposition. They can slobber, however.
The Whittier-based rescue service operates throughout Southern California and goes up as far as Santa Barbara and down to San Diego. It also goes out to the Inland Empire, all the way to Palm Springs. It has a fulltime staff and also lots of volunteers.
