Heat brings about extra caution at Premier tourney

"The dog days of summer" are upon us, with temperatures and heat indexes (measuring air temperatures and humidity) in the 90s and 100s a reality until heat becomes an unavoidable fact of life during July and August.

Outdoor events fill up the calendar of the hottest months of the year — baseball and softball tournaments, concerts and rallies, festivals and homecomings and carnivals and fairs.

At the Premier Baseball Junior Championship tournament played this week out at JayCee Ballpark, one of several tournament sites, on-field temperatures range anywhere from 110 to 140 degrees because of the field turf.

Players, coaches and umpires must look after themselves once they're on the field, especially whenever playing games or back-to-back games during the hottest period of the day, afternoon.

Rawlings Prospects (Mo.) manager Lenny Klaus said he sat down with his players after they knew they'd be playing in the tournament. Rawlings Prospects played back-to-back games Friday afternoon, 12:30 against the Columbia Angels (Texas) and 3 against the DBAT Mustangs Bonesio (Texas).

"We talked with them about eating a lot of fruits and trying to catch up with as many fluids as they possibly can," Klaus said. "Right now, we're trying to make sure they're all eating their breakfast and getting some fruit in them. We make sure they eat an early breakfast so they're not coming out here with a full stomach, but not an empty stomach either. We're putting a lot of fluids in them."

Klaus gave kudos to the people working at JayCee Ballpark for their looking after players, coaches, spectators and umpires.

"They're helping out quite a bit, keeping us cool with towels and you've got that little air-conditioned building down there, which I'll be headed to real quick," Klaus said, referring to outside the concession stand, a postgame hangout for players, coaches, etc., basking in the nice breeze of the “Heat Buster,” a large fan blowing out a cooling mist.

Paul Kennedy, an umpire from Lebanon, Ohio, a city around the same population as Pittsburg, believes in preparing for the heat and staying ahead of the heat.

“The key to being out on a day like today is that you have to start early in the day,” Kennedy said, after he umpired the Houston Raiders-Building Champions Navy game Saturday afternoon. “Before this game, I drank at least four bottles of water and then every half-inning, you have to keep sipping. You don't want to gulp a lot because you get over full. You just keep taking sips and sips and sips, and towel off with a wet rag and try to get that breeze going. You have to control your breathing and just relax.
