Paperweights are not Tiffany

Q: I purchased my two paperweights at an antiques shop; both are signed "L.C. Tiffany." I have included a copy of the paperwork supplied to me (with information about Tiffany Favrile glass). Are the pieces genuine Tiffany glass or copies? If they are not Tiffany, do they have value?

-- N.W., Richmond

Answer: Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of Charles Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. Louis established Tiffany Studios in 1892. The studio, which was not connected to the jewelry and silver store, made ceramics, glass and metalwork. Tiffany Studios is most famous for its lamps, glassware and windows.

Tiffany made a few paperweights associated with his desk sets, including examples in bronze and glass and a glass scarab. Tiffany's paperweight vases are well known. These are not vases meant to be used as paperweights, but vases made using methods similar to those used to make paperweights. However, traditional paperweights in Favrile glass apparently were not produced.

Because Tiffany experimented and was prolific, I checked with the curator of the Morse Museum, Jennifer Thalheimer. "These are not consistent with any of his other work and are most likely the creation of another studio," she said.

The fact that they were not made by Tiffany and have fake signatures does not mean they are worthless. The original label or etched signature could have been removed. They would retail for about $70 each.

Home to the world's most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany objects, the Morse Museum is located almost in our backyard in Winter Park. Founded in 1942 by Jeannette McKean, the museum moved to its new facility in 1995. For anyone interested in L.C. Tiffany's work, it is a must-see. For more information, visit www.morsemuseum.org .

Q: I would like any information you can provide about the Seth Thomas mantel clock that belonged to my grandmother; it is green with dark smoke-like swirls and gold metal fittings. It is in very good condition.

— B.P., Richmond

Answer: It is an Adamantine black mantel clock made by Seth Thomas between 1882 and 1917. Adamantine is a patented finish consisting of thin celluloid veneer glued to a wood clock case.

Adamantine was made in a wide variety of colors and designs and was extremely sturdy — many cases have survived and look as good today as when they were made. The veneer was developed by Celluloid Manufacturing Co. of New York and patented September 7, 1880. It sold exclusive rights to use the product to Seth Thomas in 1881.

Tiffany. How much does damage devalue a piece of L C Tiffany ...

Keith Asked: Tiffany. How much does damage devalue a piece of L C Tiffany – Favrile?

I have a wonderful L C Tiffany- Favrile Blue iredescent glass vase. It has a small chip on the rim. Can hardly be seen but it can be felt. Have another piece where somebody professionally made a hole i'm assuming for a light, just enough for a wire. Understandably it will take a away from their worth. However, with some items that can be 90% and sometimes as little as 5%. Does anybody know of approx instant % devaluation or have any suggestions of where I should go from here.

John D Answered:
Couldn't tell you how much, and I don't think anybody on a computer, sight unseen, can either.Get an appraisal, formal (paid) or informal (free) from someone who knows.Christies and Sotheby's offer services – look in the phone book, too.I know around here (SF, Ca.) Christies has a free day, when anybody can just walk in.There's another, local auction house that does the same.Get a pro or at least someone who knows something.Anybody here who might give you a real number without seeing your pieces is not any of those things, as it just can't be done.
