Paxson Elementary School's new garden in bloom

The brown-eyed Susans are blooming. The peas are poking out of the soil. The giant sunflowers are growing toward the sky. Paxson Elementary School's new garden is taking root and blossoming.

The garden, known as the Outdoor Learning Center, was finally built last spring after years of planning. Volunteers of school staff, teachers, parents, students and others numbered almost 100 in all. They put the garden together in only three weekends.

It features raised-bed vegetable gardens planted by students, herbs and flowers along the fence, a shed, and a corner where tables can seat up to 35 people.

Julie Tompkins, garden committee chair, is a Paxson parent. She did all she could to get the garden off the ground.

"I have a passion for it and so I was kind of the organizer in terms of getting meetings going," said Tompkins.

Tompkins said school gardens teach children independence along with subsistence.

"I think they can learn to be active learners and learn on their own just by looking at a garden and seeing how things grow," she said. "As the garden grows, they learn how to problem solve and further their own knowledge on their own."

Garden City Harvest, a nonprofit involved in many school gardens, played a big role in Paxson's Outdoor Learning Center. Jason Mandala, community education director, helped Paxson from the ground up.

"Part of my job is to help Missoula County Public Schools create, maintain and use school gardens as outdoor classrooms," Mandala said.

Garden City Harvest and volunteers keep the garden growing in the summer months. The nonprofit also helps make lesson plans for all the students, whether they're in kindergarten or fifth grade.

Claudia LaRance is a kindergarten teacher at the school who donated a lot of her time and energy to the garden. She was impressed, but not surprised, that everyone was completely behind the project, especially principal Kelly Chumrau. LaRance loves that the garden can be used in all school subjects, not just science and nutrition.

"You can kind of integrate an outdoor garden into just about any part of the curriculum," she said. "It's such a rich learning environment for kids."

Mandala said Garden City Harvest has collaborated to build gardens with four other schools: Lowell, Willard, Washington Middle School and Meadow Hill Middle School. Though they helped create all the gardens, the lesson plans for each are very different.

Healthy Nutrition | Lesson Plan – enough food to eat healthy foods ...

Yes, I know you are trying to lose weight, and most people eat too much food to increase body weight. So it goes without saying that the first step would be reduced in weight loss on food intake. But not so fast. Cut to eat can be harmful to eat for weight loss than too much. You do not want to starve your body.

If you do not eat enough food, your body will begin to take what is in the way of nutrients from other parts of the body needs to survive. This means that among the nutrients from the bones, teeth and vital organs, so that your body is exhausted. Your metabolism will be from the reserves of energy and your body to stay alive only the energy. So while you may think that by starving the weight down your car go faster, you do to sabotage your metabolism.

The key to the idea of ??food is "healthy." It is not enough to eat enough food your metabolism running at peak performance. You need to provide food, the energy to your body while running with minimal effort.

It is true that there are no bad "foods," if you eat them in moderation and balanced with healthy foods. Nobody wants to feel discriminated see their favorite dessert or a fast-food hamburger now and then. However, if you want fast food hamburger each day of the week and eat a piece of cake triple chocolate before bed each night without a thought of how your body reacts, you have "a bad habit of eating.

The trick is, how much food you eat with whole grains, fresh vegetables and balance of fruit, with lean meat. The choice of these foods will give you the best value for money. And people trying to lose weight often fall into the habit of skipping meals to reduce their calorie intake in general. They eat more at a later meal think they can "catch up". The problem is that you eat at the end of your daily calories by the end of the day, but the balance of calories your body adapts itself to them is biased.

For example, if you start the big day by a healthy breakfast of yogurt, eggs and toast, but then skip lunch and eat a big meal, "threw his body out of balance by the The Last Days of heavy calories. Most people are more sedentary end of the day and relax. This means that everything you eat, then it is place to relax, burned as you go each day.

Even if you skip a meal, you're hungry when you finally eat at a later time in the afternoon or early evening. They are body only uses what he needs at this time and nothing more. At the end of the day you have already burned more calories than you burn during the day. Your body ends storing excess calories in your body fat and keep it in reserve for the next time you skip a meal.
