(Tradershuddle.com) – Stocks fell for the week, posting sharp losses and snapping a 2-week winning streak. Uncertainty over the debt crisis in the euro zone and the ability of the U.S. government to reach a deal on the debt ceiling weighed heavily on sentiment, amid mixed economic data and a surprisingly strong start to the earnings reporting season, while Bernanke added volatility with its comments on the possibility of additional easing from the Fed.For the week, the blue chip index fell 1.40%; the S&P 500 Index slid 2.06% and the NASDAQ tumbled 2.45%.
At the start of the week, stocks sold off, posting their biggest loss in about a month, on escalating worries over Europe’s debt crisis contagion to Italy amid inflation hitting a 3-year in China and concern over an uneven U.S. economic recovery with dismal employment figures likely weighing on growth.
In Asia, equity markets closed mostly down, with Chinese stocks edging higher amid significant retreats in Hong Kong and the Nikkei on concern over Chinese inflation rate and on reaction to the anemic jobs growth in the U.S., which sparked concern over the health of the global economy. Meanwhile, Australian stocks fell the most over a month, hurt by weak data in the U.S. and China and on worries over corporate profits from the Australian government carbon tax plan, which was unveiled on Sunday.
In Europe, equity markets fell to a 2-week closing low, after participants sold stocks heavily on escalating worries the Greek debt crisis will spread to other countries within the euro zone periphery.
All of the S&P 500 key sectors fell, with financials, energy, and materials leading the declines, while consumer staples, utilities, and healthcare posted the smallest declines. Financials were the weakest sector on concern systemic risk will enter the banking system as contagion fears escalated, as Italian banks were under scrutiny over its large holding of Greece sovereign debt
Bank of America ( NYSE:BAC ), the largest U.S. lender, tumbled 3.27% to $10.35, posting a new 52-week low to $10.30 and biggest decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on fresh concerns over the global economy amid escalating fears of debt crisis contagion in Europe. The stock however traded slightly below its average volume, along with the broad market, which is suffering from lower trading volume, due to the summer holidays. The Charlotte, NC based lender also closed below its calculated support $10.40.
