Friends, Family Remember Campbell County Crash Victim
Lynchburg, VA - Jenny Mattox's friends have to pick up the pieces and continue on. Mattox died this weekend, along with 15-year-old Shawn Thacker, when a car they were passengers in crashed in Campbell County.
The day of the crash, Mattox spent a fun afternoon canoeing on the Staunton River with friends. It was the drive home later that night when she lost her life.
We sat down with friends and family Tuesday and heard about the fun-loving, upbeat Jenny they loved.
"I use to tell her everything. She use to tell me everything. We just had a bond and nobody could break that, no matter what," said Breanna Soto, Jenny's friend.
Breanna Soto and Jenny Mattox sparked a friendship in middle school that endured for years. The two were planning a girls night for this week.
"I find myself picking up the phone trying to call her and then I realize, I can't do that no more," said Sotto.
The day of Mattox's viewing, friends and family sit in the living room, piecing together memories.
"I don't think parents should ever have to bury their children," said Bryan Rice, Mattox's brother.
Mattox's brother, Bryan Rice, says their mom is being strong. But worries about the loss settling in after several days.
For Rice, it's hard to forget his last words to his sister.
"I told her I loved her. That's the last thing I said to her," said Rice.
Mattox leaves behind her fiance, and three-year-old son Trent. Family says she was a protective mom.
"She said she might not let him drink soft drinks until he was 18, and she might not even let him then. She wanted to do everything exactly right. She didn't want to make any mistakes with him," said Rice.
Little Trent will grow up without his mom, but there are loved ones who will tell him who she was
"You realize that there's a thick fabric, that life is very fragile," said Rice.
Rice says the family has no ill-feelings toward the driver in that crash. The 16-year-old survived.
He is now charged with DUI, underage possession of alcohol, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving with more than one passenger.

"It's tragic for both families, but it's very comforting to know that there's another family that understands what we are going through," said Bryan Rice, Mattox's brother. But at the vigil, there were memories and some lessons learned.
