Taxi a tribute to better days

While Beaver Springs is his home track and hosts several Gasser meets throughout the season, Stitely makes the trek to several neighboring states in search of fun with his taxi. Just last week, he made a seven-hour ride to Merion County Dragway in Ohio for a race. Sunday is another nostalgia race at Englishtown, N.J., and you can bet Stitely will be there along with the Tijuana Taxi, running with the East Coast Gassers division. Stitely's current ride began racing in Texas during the 1958 season, and while the car never won a national event or set any records, it was competitive. The original owner sold the car to a man in Tennessee, and it sat in storage. Stitely found the Corvette and purchased it 1974, primarily as a parts car for his two other Corvettes. The 1954 and 1955 'Vettes were eventually sold, but he kept the '53, and dubbed it the Tijuana Taxi. Originally the 'Vette raced in the Dallas, area with a 265-cubic inch engine, four-speed transmission, and Pontiac rear end. It was equipped with a single-loop roll bar and aftermarket hardtop. That original power train combination has changed multiple times and a NHRA-certified roll cage and additional safety equipment has been added to meet today's mandatory safety standards. The 1953 body, dash and interior remain original. The 2011 season saw Stitely record career best numbers in his Taxi, turning a 9.38 seconds elapsed time at a terminal speed of 144 miles per hour for the quarter-mile. "When we go to the Gasser events, we are classified in B/Gas, which runs on a 9.50 second index, and that's right where I want to run. If it runs faster than 9.50 seconds, then we have to run A/Gas and that's faster than I want to run, so B/Gas is just fine." Stitely has an ambitious schedule for the remainder of the 2011 season, planning to attend the following nostalgia races on Manassas, Va., Lebanon Valley, N.Y., the Willys Home Run in Buffalo, the Corvette-only race in Crofton, Md., the Old Days Race in Great Meadows, N.J. and the Fall Gasser Reunion at Thompson, Ohio, along with two more races at Beaver Springs, the Aug. 12 Flashback Friday race and the Oct.1 Jalopy Showdown Drags.

Golf Digest – 11July21

Golf Digest is a monthly golf magazine published by Condé Nast Publications in the United States. It is a generalist golf publication covering recreational golf and men’s and women’s competitive golf. Condé Nast Publications also publishes the more specialized Golf for Women, Golf World and Golf World Business. The magazine started in 1950, and was sold to The New York Times Company in 1969. The Times company sold their magazine division toCondé Nast in 2001.

“America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” Since 1985 Golf Digest has produced biennial rankings of “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses”. The courses are voted on by a panel of several hundred golf experts. Although Pine Valley Golf Club has topped the list every year except 2001, when Pebble Beach Golf Links ranked first, it was again outranked on the 2009-10 list – this time byAugusta National Golf Club. The magazine also produces lists of the best new courses, the best golf resorts and the best courses in each U.S. state. Before the “Greatest” rankings were introduced in 1985 Golf Digest produced lists called at different times America’s 100 Most Testing Courses and America’s 100 Greatest Tests of Golf. Alongside the “100 Greatest Courses” ranking, and using the same methodology, Golf Digest publishes a list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses”. In this context, “public” means a golf course that is open to play by the public, as opposed to a private club—not necessarily a course operated by a governmental entity. 10.
