Attractions at Pompey's Pillar, plus Clark Days this weekend
POMPEY'S PILLAR - Every year thousands of people visit Pompey's Pillar, located along the Yellowstone River east of Billings.
They come to see the signature of one very important man in America's history, Captain William Clark.
One attraction is the river walk, but it's not along the actual Yellowstone. It greets you as soon as you step out of your car.
"It talks about both the journey of Clark and his party on the Yellowstone," explains BLM Monument Manager Jeff Kitchens. "It also talks about the animals, clothing, some of the issues and challenges that they found when they were traveling down the Yellowstone. It's neat how as you get out of your car you can kind of follow a story, almost backwards in time, having you end up at the Pillar when he signed it."
Halfway through your journey along the river walk, you'll find yourself at the Interpretive Center. Inside you can sit down and enjoy a movie highlighting Clark's visit and the signature that made the landmark historic.
"It talks a little bit about Clark's visit to the pillar with some great acting and fun cinematography," Kitchens explains. "There's some opportunity in there to see the dress and the clothing of the time. To kind of meet the different characters that were on the Clark Expedition down the Yellowstone."
From the Interpretive Center, the pillar awaits. Once on top, you get a panoramic view similar to what Clark would have seen more than 200 years ago.
"We have a boardwalk that goes to the signature as well as a boardwalk that goes up to the very top of the pillar and lets you get a full 360 view of the whole area," Kitchens says.
The national monument attracts tourists from all around the world, but Kitchens is also hoping to make Pompey's Pillar a local attraction.
"I would like to make this more of a place where families know to come," he says. "Out of Billings or other surrounding areas on the weekends."
Clark Days at Pompey's Pillar kicks off at 5 p.m. Saturday and is free to the public.
A Nature Walk gets things rolling from 5:30-6:30 p.m., then from 6:30-9:30 p.m. there's a series of Historic Talks.
On Sunday, early risers can take part in a Guided Bird Walk from 6-7 a.m., followed by a Pancake Breakfast.
They'll raise the colors at 10 a.m. and that kicks off four hours of displays and activities from 10-2 p.m.
Crow Dancers take the main stage from 3-4 p.m. complete with a teepee raising.
