Summer camp develops ice skills

The Lake of the Woods Development Camp is putting the summer on ice.
As the thermometer climbs outdoors, local hockey players will hole-up in the Keewatin Memorial Arena for a week in August at a pair of camps — a prospect conditioning camp, geared toward athletes in the midget, university and professional ranks, and a youth hockey school, aimed at players aged six- to 12-years-old.
The prospect camp gets underway first — August 7-11 — and focuses on nutrition, stretching and strength training both on- and off-ice.
The camp wraps-up with in-season training programs, which Brian Kozak, an assistant coach with the Quesnel Millionaires in the BCHL who is running the camps, said will give participants a leg-up in the upcoming season.
"Most players, they work out in the summer, hockey season starts and they hardly ever do any lifting or training in the winter, it's all on ice," he said. "That's when you can make big gains compared to the rest of the field, in the winter."
The conditioning camp is open to skaters 13-years-old and up.
The hockey camp, which kicks off August 8 and runs through August 12, features five head instructors, a handful of local group leaders and is divided into three categories — ages six-to-eight, nine-to-10 and 11-to-12.
Along with Kozak, coaches include Doug Hedley, a junior coach with more than two-decades experience behind the bench, Joe Martin, a former KIJHL junior B coach of the year, local goalie coach Sean Spencer, who punched a time card in the East Coast Hockey League, and local high school coach Clint Fenlon, who will work with players both on- and off-ice.
Group leaders will be made up of local players who have either worked their way through, or are still competing in, the midget ranks, including; Carson Dubchak, a former Kenora midget player currently playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds; Brennan Dubchak, a former Thistle currently in talks with a handful of British Colombia junior clubs and Jackson Fregeau.
In addition to offering campers a chance to meet locals who carried their hockey out of town, Kozak said it also gives the older players a chance to give back to the community that opened doors ahead of them.
"The idea — and I try to pass it on to these young guys — is 'who did all this for you when you weer young? Your parents and volunteer coaches,'" said Kozak. "Those guys get paid nothing for minor hockey, so lets give back.
