My first view of Jane Duffield and Paul Pioszak’s gardens at their home at 5594 W. Cedar Drive was from inside the house, looking down from an upstairs window. Jane had taken the screen out so I could get a good shot from above without getting wet in the rain that persisted through last week. Their garden is concentrated mostly in one large area, ringed with felled birch trees and wattle fencing made from spruce they have cut down, with other gardens taking shape around the home. The structures in the garden, located on the house’s drain field, stood above the flowers. All handcrafted by Paul, the wattle fencing, birch path outlines, tripod frames and tiered wall holding an espaliered apple tree make good bones for a garden. Jane has filled in with varying heights of plants, potatoes and interesting objets d’art. The red cedar-sided house sets off a hanging orange nasturtium by the front door. It contrasts warmly with a creamy dappled willow and acts as a backdrop for a tangerine-stained table made by Jane’s father. That table waits on the back deck for visitors to sit and enjoy the scenery a moment, with strings of dragonfly and cherry lights setting the mood after dark. “I hope people will sit and stay awhile,” Jane said, adding there are benches around the property. A hanging swing in the garden sits next to an apple tree with outstretched limbs growing on a handcrafted frame. Jane and Paul decided to recreate the espalier after visiting England, where trees are grown along warm brick walls to make the most of limited sunny days. Many will recognize the back half of Mary and John Stroba’s gardens at 1707 Superior Street from the raised beds that can be seen across from Sault Area Middle School. Those who use the walking path that runs along the Stroba property will recognize Abby, their 3-legged dog, a sweet stray adopted from the animal shelter and later profiled in this newspaper. Visitors to the 10-year-old gardens will see beds grouped by variety: hostas, evergreens, peonies and day lilies. The Strobas use large plants such as tree lilacs, sunburst locust, flowering crab, crimson maple, gingko, ninebark or star magnolia to anchor other beds. Lovage, an heirloom vegetable, towers near false indigo. Mary uses the hollow stems of the lovage plant, which has a celery-like taste, to sip beverages such as tomato juice.
