HE WAS one of the first people I met at the Watford Observer, sitting hunched in a chair in a far corner of the office, contemplating his keyboard and rubbing his face.

Hair swept back, eyes slightly watery, wearing loafers with no socks. His face, striking and handsome, cracked into a smile, chatting away and enjoying a gossip.

Some lucky people have a natural, unforced presence, and he was one of them.

That first morning, we certainly had a chat about journalism and about the characters in the office. We would also have spoken about football, and perhaps about where you might go for a pint. But definitely, definitely, there would have been some laughs.

You couldn’t have a conversation with Sean Hoare and not have some laughs. His face would rise into a smile, the head would nod gently, and a giggle would turn into a chortle, then a gasp of smoker’s cough, and then go back to a laugh all in one breathless go.

He was a reporter on the Observer’s free edition, where his irreverence inspired the whole tone of the paper. He thrived on trying to get one over on the paid-for Observer, for which I worked, but it was always about pride in the title, rather than anything personal. If you wanted help with a story, he’d offer it, without hesitation, whoever you were.

Indeed, over those happy years in the wonderfully old fashioned offices in Rickmansworth Road , while Sean plotted scoops and scandals, I can’t imagine how many times I wandered over to his desk, sat down and just chewed the fat. And enjoyed that big, ready smile.

And now that same face stares back at me from front pages. Poor, poor Sean. What a horribly young age to go and what an awful waste of a talented man.

Whatever his demons might have been – and there were a few – I truly don’t know anybody who thought Sean was, in any way, a bad man. Quite the opposite, in fact – he was a loyal friend, a hugely entertaining colleague and truly one of the most charismatic people I’ve ever known.

I worked with Sean in the early 1990s. It was an era when many of us wanted to change the world, or at least get a job on a broadsheet paper.

But Sean, unashamedly, was focused on becoming a reporter on a red-top tabloid, not least because he thought it would be a fun way to spend his career.

He was sure about his plan, and had such charm and purpose that it never crossed my mind that he would fail to get there.
