Children learn the art of staying safe near building sites

YOUNGSTERS in Altrincham are in the picture when it comes to staying safe - having designed their own posters warning of the dangers of playing near construction sites.

The children from Broadheath Primary School were invited to draw safety signs following a visit from Redrow’s health and safety mascot Buster Bear.

Those who created the best posters were presented with their prizes when Buster, along with the company’s health and safety manager, David Ford, and Jeff Dickinson, site manager of Stamford Brook in Altrincham, returned to the school.

David explained: “Because Broadheath School is so close to our site at Stamford Brook it’s important that the children are aware of the potential hazards.”

Budding artists Connor Erskine, eight, Lili Nyeste, 10, Jessica Beattie, six, Olivia Fielding, five, and Kaitlyn Horrocks, six, were presented with gift vouchers as their prizes.

Redrow will display the children’s artwork on site at Stamford Brook.

Safety signs and symbols are used internationally to warn people of impending danger.  They communicate important messages using words as well as pictures making them easily understood regardless of the language you speak.  This enables them to be ideal internationally to warn people of dangerous situations or facts that they need to be aware of.

Safety signs are applicable in just about any environment whether in the workplace, in schools, in hospitals, laboratories or on construction sites and on the roads.  These signs were invented to keep us safe and it is our responsibility to know what they mean and the consequence of ignoring them.

Construction sites are filled with hazardous equipment and it is extremely important to take not of any safety signs that are displayed on any construction site.  If you fail to heed any warning given and you get injured then you will have no one to blame and will be responsible for all your medical bills.

Road safety tips are essential and are placed all over the roadways.  You will notice stop signs, heed warnings, slow down signs and speed limit signs.  When motorists ignore these signs you will notice more accidents taking place.

Wet Floor signs are one of the more popular safety signs.  It is seen in just about every workplace, shopping malls and any place were the floor might be wet for whatever reason.  Ignoring the wet floor sign can cause severe damage.  If you slip and fall and sustain injuries you could end up in the hospital for a long period of time.  Whenever you see a wet floor sign, pay close attention and find another route to your destination.

Safety tips in the workplace are important.  Workers should pay close attention and know what to do in case an emergency situation should arise.  Know where the emergency exits are and also where fire extinguishers are located as this could help save lives one day.

Safety signs and symbols are there to protect us it is our responsibility to learn about them.
