Transatlantic trips proliferate

Higher fares and hefty fuel surcharges don't seem to have dampened the demand for transatlantic travel.

More destinations are available this summer, and Air Canada is getting more competition.

Air Transat, which already flies into more than two dozen European cities, has added exotic Istanbul, with flights from Toronto on Sundays through to Oct. 9.

Sunwing Airlines, which launched summer flights to Amsterdam last year, has added six more major European cities: London, Paris, Dublin, Rome and Porto and Lisbon in Portugal. Flights will operate until Sept. 12.

Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia, is a fascinating destination in its own right. Transat Holidays also has put together packages that allow travellers to see more of Turkey.

Details are in Transat Holidays' 339-page, Europe Collection catalogue, one of several through which I've been leafing.

One thing travellers will like about Europe Collection is that information on hotels includes things such as whether there's free parking or free Internet access.

It also spells out what's meant by the terms continental breakfast, cold buffet and hot buffet. (Breakfast of some description is included either in the room rate or as part of a tour package in most European countries but can vary considerably in content.) Besides the usual coach tours and cruises, Europe Collection offers apartment rentals in major cities, something more and more travellers seem to want.

Among the more interesting options in Air Canada Vacations' Europe and Mediterranean 2011 Collection are rail journeys. One dubbed the Fashion Capitals Rail Journey involves flying to London, taking trains to Paris, Milan and Rome, and flying home from there. Flights, rail tickets and accommodation are arranged. Participants are on their own for sightseeing and most meals.

One of the escorted small-group tours that caught my eye was Les Gourmandises de Paris, in which a "food connoisseur'' takes you to bakeries and shops selling pastries and chocolates. (Warning: Press your nose against the window of a French patisserie and you can abandon any thoughts of calorie control).

CIT Tours' new Enchanting Europe and the Best of Italy 2011 brochure has independent rail tours, including a new one in Britain and another combining London and Paris. CIT also does wine and gourmet tours.

New for CIT are air-inclusive vacations with Air Transat through to Oct. 12. Among them are four independent itineraries - one combines Rome and the Amalfi coast - and seven-day villa stays on Tuscan estates. CIT also does small-coach tours - maximum 16 passengers - in various parts of Europe AlbaTours, which specializes in Italy, is introducing a specialty coach tour in Piedmont highlighting the region's cities, castles, cinema, cuisine and wine.

Has anybody ever gone on the train from Paris to Rome during the daytime hours. I understand it takes 14 hours. Don't know where the train travels but Switzerland is sorta between Paris and Rome. I want to know if the scenery is worth sitting up for 14 hours. I have taken the train in the US from Chicago to Seattle and the ride was quite interesting. My husband and myself (we are retired) are planning to go to Paris and then on to

We have decided not to take the tour and instead make our own arrangements - then we can skip London and go to Paris and Rome spending more time in each of those cities. My main love is Italy and Rome. That is why we would like to take the train and see some of the countryside of France and Italy. We will have to up our budget but will still look for bargains on our trip. The trains are very confusing as we have never dealt with them. In the US we just go to AmTrak. What is the most popular and best deal in Europe and what is the best website to view it. We only want to take the train from Paris to Rome - no other rides. We will fly out of Rome at the end of our trip. (flying into Paris at the beginning) We are both retired and are very excited about this trip. It will be the first time for both of us to Europe and we want to make the most of it. Thanks!

sunburst - If you will only be taking the one train, you can probably book discount tickets on the French rail website. Each country has their own train system and website. You won't find discounted tickets on general rail websites such as RailEurope or budgeteuropetravel. On the French rail site, you can't select the US as your country if you want discount tickets as it will roll over to RailEurope. If you want to select a route through certain areas AND get discounts, you might book a ticket from Paris to somewhere in Switzerland on the French website, then book a ticket from Switzerland on to Milan on the Swiss rail site. You would book the remainder of Milan/Rome on the Italian website. Most tickets can't be booked more than 4 months in advance.
