Jeannot easing back into UNH lineup

DURHAM — Of a tight end's two primary responsibilities, one is a lot more glamorous than the other.

There's the precision and grace of catching passes. And there's the grunting strength and footwork that go into good blocking.

Most tight ends love the former. Chris Jeannot can't wait until he gets a chance to resume doing the latter.

"I want to get in there and take that first hit and see if I'm OK," he said.

It's been a long and trying 11 months for Jeannot, a 6-foot-6 fifth-year senior whose junior season was severely curtailed when he suffered a concussion in a loss at Rhode Island in Week 3.

He returned late in the season for two more games, including the 45-20 playoff win at Bethune-Cookman. But his final production — 24 catches for 205 yards — wasn't much more than his sophomore year, when he was backing up All-American Scott Sicko.

Of course, Jeannot had more on his mind during that stretch than just missing football games.

"It was tough to stay in school," he said. "Concentration. And the major one for me was vision. I could just tell my vision was out of whack. My memory. But everything's come back. It's weird how they work."

He was cleared to run around and catch passes during the spring, but not participate in contact drills.

"This summer I went to see some doctors at (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) and we kept talking, between my doctors and the doctors here," said Jeannot, who grew up in Moon Township, Pa. "Gradually, throughout the summer, things kept getting better and better, to the point where at the end of the summer there were no symptoms, nothing."

This week should be a milestone for Jeannot, who has been eased into training camp and promised some full-go sessions over the next few days.

"He blocked some people (Friday), which was good," said UNH coach Sean McDonnell. "Every step of the way here, he feels great and we feel great. We've got to keep him healthy and get him to the games."

The 'Cats made do at tight end last year, with the 6-foot-4 Sean Cullen catching 20 passes for 250 yards but missing time with a dislocated shoulder, and Kyle Auffray blocking well. Cullen is back, as is Harold Spears, a promising, 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman.

The Wildcats are just 15 days away from their Sept.
