•Local emergency personnel are competing in the second annual Boots vs. Badges Blood Drive. The drive is from 2-7 p.m. Monday at the Swisher Memorial Building-Gayler Room. Donors will have a chance to vote for their hero — “Boots” for firefighters or “Badges” for law enforcement. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 331-8800. 

The Tulia Volunteer Fire Department topped law enforcement last year, 28 units to 17.

•The Tulia Transfer Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections has a new warden following Patsy Bell’s retirement.

Jamie Baker has served as a correctional officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. She previously served as assistant regional administrator at the Plainview unit and assistant warden at the Bill Clements unit in Amarillo. — Swisher County News

Silverton

Briscoe County commissioners voted 3-2 to allow Sheriff Gene Smith to use the allotted $15,000 in the budget to purchase a 2007 Ford Explorer with 70,000 miles for use by the department. Smith will trade in the department’s oldest vehicle.

While the commissioners were still in court, Smith informed them the dealer would not accept the $15,000 plus trade-in for the Explorer. Smith did find a 2008 Dodge Durango with 30,000 miles for the $15,000 plus trade-in. Commissioners approved that transaction. — Briscoe County News

Hale Center

Hale Center High School student Tessa Zuniga has been selected to take part in the Honors Symposium at Harding University. 

Selection is on an individual basis with consideration given to GPA, standardized test scores and a reference letter. The symposium consists of four two-week long sessions with 50 students per session. Students participate in lectures, discussion groups and interactive classes.

•South Plains Electric Cooperative members and employees contributed $30,750 to 41 area volunteer fire departments, including Hale Center’s, in a show of appreciation for fighting recent wildfires. Each department received $750. Cotton Center, Abernathy, Halfway and Petersburg also received $750 checks. — Hale Center American.
