A no-quitting attitude

Cotton, 54, who said she dropped out of high school in 10th grade, recently received her GED from the Community Technical and Adult Education Center after much hardship in her life, including a losing her husband to cancer and numerous health problems herself.

Audience members had come to hear the School Board debate adopting a four-day school week in 2012-13. But Cotton stole the show.

Cotton talked about dropping out of high school in the 10th grade in the 1970s, hitting the work force to "help my family."

In 2000, she began taking courses at CTAE, though a year later had to drop out to have surgery on her neck to remove a tumor. She ended up "losing the jugular vein in my neck when it burst."

By 2004, after a second surgery, Cotton had trouble with her hands. She struggled with everyday life. Then in 2005, her husband was diagnosed with cancer. He died a year later.

In 2008, she launched her educational journey again.

"I knew it was something my husband would've have wanted me to finish, so I was determined to complete my high school studies," she said, reading aloud a statement to the silent School Board audience. "My writing was greatly affected. I still do not have complete use of my hands."

At one point, Cotton was ready to give up.

"I was getting very discouraged and telling myself that I could not do this," she noted, adding that CTAE teachers were encouraging and supportive. "They kept telling me: ‘You can do this.'?"

For two years, Cotton kept taking the General Equivalency Development test in hopes of that one day she would get her diploma. Last September, she finally passed the writing portion of the GED to graduate.

"It took 10 long years to achieve my dream of getting my high school education, but it was worth it to walk down the aisle to receive my diploma," she said, as the crowd still remained silent.

Cotton then read a poem, "Don't Quit" by an unknown author. It summarized her journey.

"When things go wrong, as they sometimes will. When the road you're trudging seems all uphill. When funds are low and debts are high, and you want to smile, but have to sigh.

"When care is pressing you down a bit. Rest, if you must, but don't you quit."

That first stanza left the crowd nearly in tears.
