Diagnosis eye-opening for the sleep-deprived

Do you have a sleep disorder? If one or more of the following apply to you, you might.

• You snore loudly or heavily.

• Excessive sleepiness or lack of energy in the daytime.

• Trouble with concentration or memory.

• You fall asleep while driving, in meetings or at other improper times.

• Occasional morning headaches.

• You sleepwalk, have nightmares, or have night terrors.

• Depression or mood changes.

• Trouble going to sleep or staying asleep.

• Recent weight gain or high blood pressure.

• You hold your breath when you sleep.

Since she was a teen, Hudon-Johnson had often found herself nodding off — in class, at the store, even at the wheel of a car.

“I knew I was going to die,” she said. “There was going to be a point where I wasn't lucky anymore.”

However, she said, she has avoided that fate by falling asleep in the right place. At the Integris Sleep Disorders Center of Oklahoma , staff attached sensors to her head, abdomen and legs and placed her in a comfortable hotel-like room equipped with night- vision cameras.

From the activity of her brain, her breathing and other factors, they diagnosed Hudon-Johnson, now 39, a hospital nutritionist in Norman , with narcolepsy. They prescribed medication to make her brain more alert when it should be, and they set her up with a regimen to keep her sleep cycles consistent.

“It did save my life,” she said.

Up to 100 million Americans fail to get a good night's sleep, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine . Eighty-four different sleep disorders can cause any number of problems, from lower quality of life, to work-related issues, even to life-threatening situations, such as unsafe driving, the academy said.

Most people sleep well. Those who have problems might seek out people such as Dr. Jonathan Schwartz , board certified sleep specialist and medical director at the Integris center.

Lack of sleep can make you more than just tired, he said. People with insomnia, disturbed sleep or problems falling asleep or staying asleep face two times the risk of chronic anxiety and four times the risk of developing depression, he said. Those problems can contribute to hypertension and heart disease and can cause other problems. And depression, anxiety or pain caused by lack of sleep can contribute to more “fragmented sleep,” Schwartz said. “Like a dog chasing its tail.

Could I have a local dealer finish bad repair work done by out of state dealer on the latter’s bill?

I was visiting Vegas recently when my car had a problem with the ignition. Having some free time I took it in to a dealership to have them look at it. They diagnosed it, did work on it, finished the same day, I paid, and the problem seemed to be gone. The next day I returned home to California and then the problem returned. So I feel the Nevada dealership is responsible for fixing it, considering what they did didn’t fix the problem and I already paid for it. Normally, I would simply bring it into that dealership and ask them to complete their work, but they are five hours away. Could I have the completed work done at a local dealership and ask the Nevada one to pay for it? Would they?

admin answers:

First you can have the dealer in CA repair it, but you will most likely have to pay the bill. Then you can file for the NA dealer to pay back what you already paid them. You can put in a claim with the Better Business Bureau www.bbb.org If you paid by cc you can stop payment, but you MUST show work done by the CA dealer with detailed bill and work done to show that proper repair was not done or was done incorrectly. Have the CA dealer look it over to make sure that it is the same problem and that it isn’t something new or unrelated to the first repairs. You can get your money back if you can show that they did not do what they were supposed to. If all else fails you can take them to small claims court, but being out of state it may be more hassle than it’s worth. Also knowing that you are out of state they know that most likely what ever they do or goes wrong after you leave you wont be back.
