American Airlines announces record-breaking aircraft order
American Airlines stirred the aviation industry from Grapevine's Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport this week by announcing the largest aircraft order in history.
Under new agreements with Boeing and Airbus, the Fort Worth-based company has set out to replace and transform its aging aircraft fleet, reduce its operating and fuel costs, and deliver a better customer experience — larger overhead bins, better lighting and a roomier feel.
The order includes a total of 460 narrowbody, single-aisle aircraft from the Boeing 737 and Airbus A230 families — 200 from Boeing and 260 from Airbus at a market price of $40 billion. The first of the planes will be delivered to American in 2013.
"These new deliveries are expected to pave the way for American to have the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet among its U.S. airline peers in approximately five years," a company news release said.
The agreement, which includes options to buy another 465 airplanes by 2025, will allow the company to replace its fleet of McDonnell-Douglas MD-80s, Boeing 757s and Boeing 767-200 jets. The move will drop the average American plane's age from nearly 15 years currently to younger than 10 years old by 2017.
The airline reported losses of $286 million during 2011's second quarter, but spokespeople say the company is going about its landmark move in the most cost-effective way possible. American will be taking advantage of $13 billion in committed financing from the two manufacturers through leases it says will "help maximize balance sheet flexibility and reduce risk."
The financing will fully cover the first 230 airplanes to roll up to American gates. Other savings, the airline said, would be seen in efficiency. For example, Boeing and Airbus aircraft in the 737 and A230 families offer a 35 percent reduction in fuel cost per seat versus the MD-80 and a 12 percent and 15 percent fuel cost reduction per seat, respectively, compared with the 757 and 767-200.
