The evening before the gleaning, we received a request from the Youth and Young Adult Network of the National Farm Worker Ministry (YAYA):
Due to flooding during the Memorial Day week, several farm workers of the East coast area of Florida have been left without work. This is creating a hardship situation for both workers and their families. These families will not be covered under FEMA aid, which will only help families and businesses directly affected by flooding waters in Volusia County.
Farm workers need your help. We have outlined some of the details and needs below:
- Workers live or work in: Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns, or Volusia counties
- Crops affected: cucumbers, melons, potatoes
- Human impact: workers earnings are as low as $100/week or no income
- Needs: Food, and money for bills – electric or rent
Thanks to the volunteers of the Society of St. Andrew and Smith Brothers Farms in Hastings, we were able to deliver a 1000 pounds of potatoes for the farm workers and their families.
