PUSH attends monthly ESHC general meeting

Prior to the meeting start, Mary obtained numbers of pairs of new socks needed by ESHC, St Francis House and Hastings Pie in the Sky Census outreach centers.
Bishop Ian Anderson was called upon to open the meeting with a prayer.
Jimmie Harden went over the Treasurer’s Report, stating the Basketball fundraiser netted $6800.00 including a donation from the Sawgrass Marriott. This money is to be used for an educational building at the transitional housing campus on Chapin Street.
Jerry Cameron from the county noted the plans for the St Francis House move/renovation look great although there has been vocal resistance from Ms Carol Wolf, of St Gerards Campus. Cameron also noted the funding at the state may be back in the budget. He said the Hastings and Armstrong areas were doing great work with their communities and that it looks like the county will be able to maintain funding for indigent health care through Flagler Hospital. They are trying to maintain funding for our local agencies as well. He noted the new Health and Human Services Director, Venn Thomas, was from Seattle WA and her strength is community outreach.
Dr Cheryl Hogan, from Hogan’s Harvest gave a presentation on her re entry home project. She projected the new house will be open mid April for adults only. They need cleaning supplies, towels and volunteers.
Malea Guiriba, from Pie in the Sky in Hastings, presented the situation in Hastings. Housing is their biggest issue with some people paying $60/week to live in essentially sheds. They are working on building skills based training for residents to help themselves and each other. Jean Harden mentioned there is federal funding available for housing for elderly. Malea is also working with St Johns Housing Partnership to buy foreclosed properties for rehabilitation.
Jean Harden went over the minutes of the last meeting. She also noted the DCF recommendation to cut funding for homelessness is “in limbo”.
She also stated the point in time survey conducted Jan 2010 resulted in the same number as last year: 1238.
Harden stated ESHC is going ahead with applying for Challenge grants this year. Last year they were awarded 144k; this year they got 56k to be divided between 4 agencies. This year there are 6 funded agencies eligible, with two more interested and grant applications have been sent out to these agencies. She noted the 750k grant for St Francis House is gone and encouraged everyone to write to their state senators for reinstatement. She also mentioned St Augustine Youth Services is interested in funding to refurbish the downtown location for foster care ageing out kids and will have a new location off Lewis Speedway.
Barbara Dodson, ESHC, announced training for HMIS, the tracking system for services required by HUD.
Valerie, from Goodwill Job Junction, mentioned training opportunities with EPA to do green jobs and to check them out 830 to 5PM off US 1 South. She will send out an email to the big ESHC list. Wanda Brinson noted there will be jobs opening for the new veterans’ retirement home.
Renee Morris, St Francis House, gave following updates:
1. they are continuing fundraising, 4/24 will be the annual night at the races.
2. they currently have about 500k so far in the bank
3. Pastor Hodges from St Mary’s indicated he would like to have a street fair around Easter; more info to follow
4. they are looking for a name change for the new St Francis facility
5. she talked about job counseling
6. ESG grant funding; they got EPIC contract for substance abuse treatment.

People Reducing Homelessness (www.prhstaugustine.com) had a handout stating “We have been blessed with a 300 million dollar fundraiser!” The flier asks how much money your group needs and lists Darrell@prhstaugustine.com as contact for money requests.
